Learn How to Write in Calligraphy!

Hey guys! Today I'm going to be talking about calligraphy! This is one of my absolute favorite things to do when I'm bored in class or just want to relax. Since I enjoy it so much, I thought I'd pass it on to you! Let me know in the comment section if you guys think this was helpful;)

For those of you who don't know, calligraphy is a form of decorative handwriting or written lettering. I like to do my calligraphy with brush pens, but you can do it with almost anything! I recommend Tombow calligraphy pens and Tombow ABT Dual Brush Pens if you are interested in buying pens specifically for lettering. If you are dying to start writing in calligraphy right now and can't bear the thought of waiting for the pens you ordered to arrive, find a pencil with a nice sharp point, some paper, and a smooth workspace.

Alright, first you're going to want to get a feel for the pressure you need for "up" and "down" strokes", and I'll explain what those are in just a minute. In order to do that, I want you to hold your pencil at a steep diagonal to the paper, as shown to the left.

Next I want you to practice pressure strokes. When you are making strokes that move upwards, your writing tool should be barely touching the paper with as little pressure as possible being used. When you are making strokes that move downwards, you should keep your writing tool as diagonal to the paper as possible and press down with quite a bit of pressure so that your stroke is as wide as possible. What makes calligraphy so different from typical cursive is the differences in size between strokes in letters, so the pressure you use in each stroke is extremely important. In order to practice strokes, use the exercise shown to the right from one of my first journals. It helped me get a feel for what I needed to do to make the up and down strokes, and I hope it has the same results for you.

Now that you've mastered pressure strokes, it's time to move on to letters! Here's an alphabet I made with a Tombow Calligraphy Pen. Practice these letters and let me know when you guys are ready for instructions on how to connect letters to make words!
